I am not one of the Grand Poobahs of bridge, nor will I ever be. While I was an Intermediate/Novice I kept thinking, what do all these other people know that I don't? What are the tricks? From a lot of reading, but mostly through the school of hard knocks, I learned how to improve, one trick at a time.
There has got to be a better way, I kept thinking. And there was: this is the book I wished I had read when I was an I/N.
I started out compiling the tips and techniques as an aid to others at the bridge club. I figured I could give some lessons and help others understand the keys for Intermediate/Novices to improve. Eventually I realized I had the makings of a book. Master Point Press agreed, but told me I had written a long pamphlet, not a short book. I needed to flesh it out -- by about 50%.
And it needed editing, which Ray Lee expertly provided. That was especially true when it came to the problems included as the last chapter. I have a new appreciation for the folks who create bridge problems. When I was focused on illuminating point A, I'd completely miss that my problem also had a point B, which may have been even more important that point A. Ray saw the land minds and recommended which problems to keep, which to modify and which to replace. He was always right and I was lucky to have his expertise.
