Originally written in French by Borel and Cheron, this is THE book on many aspects of the mathematics of the game. It is not easy going but it is worthwhile reading. The discussions are wide ranging over topics such as restricted choice and the theory of the shuffle. It is one of those books that can be read in whole or in part. As an aside, I can only marvel at the ingenuity of the authors in performing their calculations without the use of modern computers. It is a lesson for anyone who wishes to indulge in such work - some theoretical work on lessening and speeding up the calculations in bridge odds is worthwhile for many results can be deduced from arguments based on symmetry. This is an important book for anyone who wishes to undertake any serious work on odds-related aspects of the game. The only minor criticism I have is one of lay out - perhaps the magnificent tables in the appendices could have been included in the text too.
