A book of historical interest because it attempts to present the objectives of bidding. An overview of five then  popular systems is each given a chapter along with a sixth which attempts to reconcile some of their competing aims. An appendix gives the laws of various forms of the game and there is one page on Lenz's idea of having a takeout bid called the "Challenge".
